What Are the Four Pillars?
Your BaZi (八字) — literally "eight characters" — is built from the moment you were born. Your birth year, month, day, and hour each become a pillar, and every pillar holds one Heavenly Stem (天干) on top and one Earthly Branch (地支) below. Four pillars × two characters = eight characters. In Korea this same chart is called Saju (사주), meaning "four pillars."
Each character carries one of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) in a Yin or Yang form. A BaZi reading is essentially the study of how these eight elemental forces balance, support, and restrain one another.

BaZi vs. Western Astrology
Western astrology tracks planets moving through twelve zodiac constellations. BaZi instead uses the Chinese solar calendar and the Five Elements expressed through ten stems and twelve branches. Where Western charts emphasize planetary aspects and houses, BaZi emphasizes elemental balance and timing — which forces are strong or weak in you, and when the Luck Pillars bring them forward.
That difference is why many people read both: the Western chart for psychological archetypes, the BaZi chart for elemental strategy and timing.
